On Friday, December 13, Lacey Spring Elementary School hosted a delightful "Holiday Celebration at the Cinema" assembly that brought students and staff together for a sing-along extravaganza inspired by classic holiday films. With festive characters, creative performances, and lots of holiday spirit, the event was a fun and memorable way to celebrate the season.
The assembly began with a nod to Elf, featuring Mr. Martin dressed as Buddy the Elf. Buddy entertained the crowd by eating spaghetti with maple syrup and spreading cheer with the movie's iconic quote, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” Students joined in for a lively rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
Next, Frosty the Snowman came to life with a student dressed as Frosty, strolling through the audience as everyone sang along to the beloved song.
The magic of Frozen was brought to the stage with students playing to roles of Olaf, Elsa, and Anna. The trio pretended to sing along to Do You Want to Build a Snowman? While Olaf delighted the audience with snow-themed jokes, including:
Why can’t you give Elsa a balloon? Because she’ll let it go!
What kind of cereal does Elsa like to eat? Frosted Flakes!
A comedic chase scene from Home Alone followed. Kevin defended himself by throwing soft "snowballs" while Marv and Harry stumbled and fell, to the amusement of the crowd. The scene concluded with the iconic line, “Merry Christmas, you filthy animal,” setting the stage for a sing-along to Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.
The arrival of Santa Claus, played by Mr. Martin, had students singing Up on the Housetop while teachers showered the audience with fake snow, adding an extra festive touch.
In a comical turn, Mr. Baker as the Grinch “stole” presents from Santa, staying safely near the stage while You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch played in the background.
The assembly also paid homage to A Christmas Story, with Mrs. Whetzel-Turner dressed in the iconic pink bunny suit, walking grumpily through the room. The audience joined in for Deck the Halls while Mrs. May playfully showed off her holiday attire during the line “Don we now Mrs. May’s apparel.”
To close out the celebration, the school brought A Charlie Brown Christmas to life. Staff members dressed as characters from the film danced joyfully around a piano, accompanied by Ms. Van Roekel on piano and a student on ukulele. Props like candy canes and scarves added to the whimsical atmosphere.
Students Give Back to the Community
While the "Holiday Celebration at the Cinema" brought joy to the school, the students of Lacey Spring Elementary have also been busy spreading holiday cheer in the community. The Lacey Spring Student Council partnered with a local church to help stock their food bank for the holiday season.
Each year, the school launches a "Canned Food Drive" in November or December, challenging each class to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible. The Student Council creates posters, sends flyers home to parents, and works with teachers to encourage participation.
The top three classes are rewarded with small prizes for their generosity, but the spirit of giving goes far beyond the rewards. “I truly believe the families at Lacey simply love to help one another and their community,” said a school representative.
Through this effort, the students and families of Lacey Spring Elementary demonstrate the true meaning of the holiday season—coming together to support neighbors in need and make a positive difference in their community.
Lacey Christmas Cruise-In
To close out the week of celebrations, the PTO hosted the annual Lacey Christmas Cruise-In on Friday night. The school was aglow with inflatables, creating a magical atmosphere for families. Gifts and treats were distributed, making the evening a special way for the Lacey Spring community to connect and celebrate together.
The combination of festive fun, community service, and family engagement has made this holiday season one to remember at Lacey Spring Elementary!
