First Graders dug up their potatoes that they planted in Kindergarten. They ate some in their class, then they delivered the rest to the Food Bank next to our school.

What's growing on in our garden? We have children hiding in the corn! Can you find them? The Moomaw family had fun not only working but also playing in the school garden the other week. They were the last of our summer families helping us keep the garden growing and looking nice. Thank you to the Moomaws and the rest of our families for taking the time to make it a success!

A couple of Mrs. Lohr's students picked sweet peppers last week and on Monday their class had a pepper party! They enjoyed eating the peppers with a little Ranch dressing. This week Lohr's class will try the first watermelon picked. They'll let us know later how it was and if ripe, we'll pick more for other classes.

While our cucumbers succumbed to a blight, the Gherkins (heirloom seed from Monticello) are growing like crazy. They are an unusual, small, prickly cucumber-like vegetable that students have fun hunting and eating.

However, we are not done planting for the season. Last week we sowed carrots (see picture for round carrots!), lettuce, and transplanted broccoli starts.

🎧 New Podcast Episode: Expanding Communication in Our Classrooms

What does it look like when students learn to communicate in more than one way?

In our latest episode, host Katie LaPira sits down with Lacey Spring Elementary principal Tammy May and JMU professor Melissa Nguyen to explore how American Sign Language (ASL) is being introduced in elementary classrooms, and the impact is inspiring.

From building confidence and supporting reading development to fostering inclusion and meaningful connections, ASL is helping students communicate in powerful new ways. Even our youngest learners are discovering how movement, expression, and visual language can open doors.

✨ You’ll also hear:
• How ASL supports students of all abilities
• Simple ways families can practice at home
• What the future of this initiative could look like in our schools

This conversation highlights how communication can bring us closer together across classrooms and across our community.
